Creating A Blog – For Profit

I touched on blogging in my last post. In this article, we’ll cover the basics of creating a blog. For those not too familiar with blogging, a blog (or web log) is way of communicating to people with a similar interest. I suppose it’s almost like a diary of sorts.

Like any website, blogs cover a broad range of subjects. Some examples could be:

  • Business
  • Interests
  • Portfolio
  • Hobbies
  • Education

You can use a blog to write about anything you want. In fact I write a blog called “Make Money With Betting” which is aimed at the lucrative gambling market place. Why start a blog about something you know, or are interested in. It’s really easy, if I can do it, so can you!

Blogging Platforms

When starting out, there are a few options to consider. Do you just want to get your story out there, or do you want your own money making machine, that you control?

If you just want to just get going, you can start for free by using a free blog platform. These are really easy to use, they’re completely free, but are very limited in their functionality. If resources are tight, or you want to just get going, they’re ideal. I’ve listed a few below to help you:

If you go the free route, it may be an idea to purchase a domain name later on. This will give you your own identity, and you can transfer it later on, if you choose a hosted solution.

Don’t worry if this sounds confusing, it’s not. It’s just easier to consider a few things before you start, that’s all.

Many users opt for their own domain name and own hosting. This site is a hosted solution, and I use IONOS. They’re part of one of the largest hosting providers, and they’re pretty reasonable on price. The package I chose includes two free domain names.

Paid blogging platforms include:

  • WordPress
  • Drupal
  • Joomla

WordPress tends to be the most popular platform. The main reason being that it’s just so flexible and you can customize it to your own look. I will state right here though, that it takes a little time to learn. It’s not the most user friendly to learn.

Learning WordPress

In order to get started with WordPress, I have an incredible and cost effective solution for you. I’ve tried and tested it myself, and this website has been built using the exact principles.

I recommend you take a look at Wealthy Affiliate. This is an online course that teaches you to build a website from day one. You even get free hosting for 2 websites and you can get started for free.

I have seen other courses, but for the best free training, Wealthy Affiliate takes a lot of beating. There is a paid option, which I also recommend, but this isn’t required in order to publish your first few websites.

Everything is included, including ideas for finding a subject (or niche), designing the site, adding advertising or affiliate links, getting ranked on search engines, and making money. That’s the reason you want to start a blog, right?

How Much Money Can You Make?

I’m sure you want to know exactly what to expect, I know I did. Firstly blogging is a form of delayed gratification. As a result, it takes quite a lot of work and time to get traffic to a new blog or website. It’s for this reason, I recommend the excellent training from Wealthy Affiliate.

With the correct training, here’s an indication of what’s possible with hard work. These are annual figures, but for some, monthly:

Year 1 $1,000 – $10,000

Year 2 $10,000 – $30,0000

Year 3 $30,000 – $500,000

Year 4 $50,000 – $100,000

Year 5 $100,000 – $250,000

Most people give up within the first year, leaving a fortune on the table. If you start a blog, just keep going, no matter what. These results will come. It just takes the search engines like Google to rank your content.

You’re more likely to keep writing, if you’re truly interested in the subject matter. That’s why hobby sites tend to do particularly well.

How Much Time Do I Need?

Most people tend to start blogging in their spare time, around other commitments. The time you dedicate to your blog will determine its success and profitability.

Blogging is unlike traditional work, you’re the boss, and therefore you determine your work rate. I know of people that blog daily and some that just write twice weekly.

When you consider that web traffic and ranking is based on content, then the more content, the better. For some, $1000 a month will take a year, others will take two or three years. The key point, is that everyone will get there in the end, provided that they don’t give up.

The drip feeding effect of adding content over time helps to grow what we call residual income. The posts you write early on in your blogging career, will still be producing income 5-10 years later. That’s why we keep adding content. Writing just three posts a week, will result in 150 posts at the end of the year. After five years, you’ll have 750 posts working for you. Google loves content, and will rank your posts accordingly.

Ways To Make Money Blogging

Blogs make money in a variety of different ways. You can choose the ideal solution for your own needs. Some people just build blogs and then sell them once they start making money. Sites like Flippa allow you to auction your site off. These sell really well when they’re making money. A site with around 18 months work can command around $30,000.

Other ways to make money include advertising , affiliate schemes, selling your own products, building an email list and guest blogging. Most ardent bloggers use a variety of all of these methods. Multiple streams of income are far more reliable than just the one.

Summary

To summarize, my recommendation is to just get started. Build content that your prospective readers will find valuable. Engage in some decent training, my free recommendation is Wealthy Affiliate, but there are others. A quick Google search will help. If you choose the manual route, then check out hosting with Ionos for a good deal.

I’d advise you to have the mentality of giving your blog a year of hard work. Make your writing consistent, and this gets easier when you form a routine. By using your training, you will get results if you write 3 posts a week for a year. After that, the skies the limit when it comes to earning ability.

Feel free to contact me if you need help, I’d love to see your new blog up and running.
